Great Mac Tips and Our Contest Winners
August 25th, 2010

After Chris Pirillo wrote 100 Mac tips for our blog we asked you to tweet to @ParallelsMac on Twitter with your favorite Mac tip for a chance to win an Apple Magic Trackpad or a copy of Parallels Desktop 5.  Congratulations to our randomly chosen winners: splitjewel, 25zerotwo and David Canerday.  They submitted great tips, as did all of our contest participants.  Check out some of our favorites:

1. You can Force Quit an application from the option in the Apple menu.

2. Hold Cmd to drag the icons in your menu bar and re-arrange them.

3. Tap or click the trackpad on a Mac laptop with two fingers to right-click, instead of using the Command key.

4. You can narrow your search in Spotlight by using kind:<type> where type can be any filetype as described by the Finder, for example jpg, pdf, numbers, etc…

5. You can remap the otherwise useless caps-lock key in keyboard preferences to ⌘, ⌥ or ⌃

6. While In A Windows V/M Cntrl + Option + Delete Will Open The Windows Task Manager, Just Like On A Real PC.

7. Hitting “X” only closes a window, not the whole app. To close the whole app and free up resources use CMD+Q.

8. Use GeekTool and a text document to make an easy todo list on your desktop.

9. Navigate to /System/Library/CoreServices/MenuServices and double click any of the .menu items to add to menu bar

10. Efficient way to eject stuck CD/DVD: open Terminal and type ” drutil tray eject ” this often works and saves rebooting

11. Use Parallels in full screen mode on a separate desktop space. Now you can switch to Win using alt+cursor keys

12. Use your spotlight to do quick calculations rather than the calculator
