Say Buh-Bye To Your VPN: iPhone Remote
December 17th, 2009
According to Patently Apple, Apple recently was granted a patent from the US Patent and Trademark Office. This patent was for the iPhone which could potentially “control a home computer remotely while on the road, at the office or elsewhere. According to the patent, an iPhone user will be able to remotely control the movements of a cursor on an iMac or MacBook to select a software application (e.g., email) from a menu or desktop icon, launch applications, control a printer or any other peripheral. Apple’s patent describes how the iPhone could have a keypad that is mapped to specific functions” as shown below.
So what happens after you technically do not need to be in front of your computer to access your information or applications?
I have already experienced slow and failed VPN connections when I try to work from home. I would be curious about the efficiency of this remote connection. So what are the implications of this remote? Taken one step further, is it possible that while your desk is primarily taken up by multiple monitors and your feet are crowded by the power plugs, that one day you may be clear of all this hardware? Perhaps the in the future we will have storage areas where people rent to have their computers stored as they work remotely. However, before I go on this 1984 George Orwell tirade, think about what the future holds when you might not have to use your VPN connection.
